I don’t know about you, Lois, but sometimes I think my orthopraxy in this area is far too influenced by disappointment. I’m tempted to shrug and walk away wondering if practising unconditional love for one another in the Body of Christ is actually a possibility in the land of the living. But that’s pretty much the definition of unbelief, isn’t it? (Sorry, Lord) I think this is something that I need to pursue a lot more – not by more effort motivated by guilt, but by seeking the One who loves perfectly.

Indeed Charis. It is clear to me that the Lord’s Word has a hierarchy of concepts and LOVE is at the top. If it is done with Love , it cannot be wrong. Many disagree with this, although it seems clear to me and your compendium of Love quotes seems to reinforce that idea.

I grew up in a pocket of Christian culture where Bible studies could be more aptly named “debate clubs.” We were very good at defining the parameters of the mark everybody else was missing (hamartia (gr) = sin = “missing the mark”) but not so good at defining or demonstrating love. I realized this had carried over into my own writing and I tended to throw in scripture references like case citations in a court of law. I was treating the person I was trying to convince as an adversary and not as a fellow pilgrim on the same road.
I have high regard for the Bible but even higher regard for the One it speaks of. Without the leading of the Holy Spirit (whose fruit testifies of his character and will be evident in a Spirit-led discussion – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faith, gentleness, self-control) the written words alone are just tools – or weapons – in the hands of people with a desperate need to be proven right and therefore worthy of approval.
I used all these references this time because the essential message of love amongst members of the Body of Christ is repeated so often it does not require arguments over translation, nor can it be eliminated by accusations of out-of-context proof-texting, nor cultural misunderstanding, nor the definition of words which appear only once in the entire book. “Love one another” is not an option. It defines the people who live and move and have their being in Christ and in whom Christ dwells. The secret of the ages now made known – Christ in us, the hope of glory.
