I ran across this quote by accident, but it made me go research the man who wrote it. He was a nonconformist Puritan who lived from 1608 to 1680. In a book about resisting the schemes of satan, Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices, he suggested ten helps. “The ten helps provide an adequate summary of the book: walk by the rule of God’s Word, don’t grieve the Spirit, strive for heavenly wisdom, resist Satan’s first motions, labor to be filled with the Spirit, remain humble, pursue watchfulness, retain communion with God, fight Satan by drawing strength from the Lord Jesus, and be much in prayer.”
These seem to be the very things the Lord has been teaching me. hmmmm I think I shall have to find more of his writings.
Some things just stand the test of time, don’t they? Although I’m sure that the acute awareness of Satan and his work is flagging in our modern churches. Perhaps that is one of the reasons we are floundering at our work??
It’s that old pendulum thing again, isn’t it? On the one hand there are folks who ignore the scriptures that advise us to be on the alert for the prowling adversary, on the other there are those (I suspect with awakening gifts of discerning of spirits) who are like Elisha’s servant and are so fearfully focused on what the enemy of our souls is doing that they are not aware of the greater things God and his heavenly army is doing. Jesus said the pure in heart will see God. “Strive for heavenly wisdom,” wrote Mr. Brooks.
what a great quote!
